Ineffective Padding Techniques
Currently staff and/or surgeons after positioning the patient on the peg board often place padding around the multiple pegs between the patient and the pegs after securing the pegs. Frequently staff and/or surgeons use corrugated “egg crate” foam material. This is typically torn from a piece of foam intended for other uses elsewhere (such as elbow or heel pads which are torn in half, cranial headrests which are also torn in half, or other pieces of foam which are felt to be sufficient to pad between the patient and the peg). Typically the pad is not a piece designed for use over that particular peg. While some gel foam materials are available, they are not single use and also raise concerns of cleanliness. These are infrequently used and are typically felt to be insufficient padding. The torn foam padding is then “wedged” between the patient and the peg. Often by the end of the procedure, as the patient is being moved about during the procedure, the pad has shifted positions and may not be protecting the patient’s skin from contact with the peg… thus defeating the purpose of the pad’s original intent. The pads are frequently loose and ill-fitting and not designed for use with the peg.
OrPegPads™ Usage
The peg pad is utilized in surgical procedures such as total hip arthroplasty (total hip replacement) where the patient is positioned in the lateral position with the operative side up. The patient is placed on top of a peg board and multiple pegs are utilized around the patient to secure the position on the table. Other uses of the peg board might be femoral or pelvis fractures or osteotomies.
Pad Design & Application
The peg pad is a foam cylindrical pad with a closed top that is designed by surgeons to slip over the peg and create a uniform surface of padding between the patient and the peg. The peg is inserted into the opening at the bottom of the cylinder and contained circumferentially by the padding material. The size and opening of the peg as well as the length adequately covers the peg and the peg is easily inserted into the inter cavity without difficulty. It is also easy to remove at the end of the surgical procedure. The near total coverage of the peg with the pad (in a condom like fashion) prevents slippage or shifting of the padding during the surgical procedure.
These pads are intended for one time use only.
